Flooding in Venice; tourists told to stay away

better2Venice, Italy is one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever visited.

My husband and I went there on our honeymoon three-and-a-half years ago. We loved how we didn’t see any cars, just water taxis, gondolas and people out on every street we walked.

But right now, this beautiful city is under water.

The Associated Press is reporting kneehigh2that this is the worst flooding in Venice in more than 20 years.

Residents and tourists had to “wade through knee-high water” Monday.

And now, roughly 3,000 people have been forced to evacuate, according to AP reports.

flood22“City officials said the sea level reached 61 inches on Monday, well past the 40-inch flood mark following heavy rains,” the AP reported. “There are very few streets that are water-free.”

The article described how people had to hop on cafe tables to stay dry at St. Mark’s Square, one of the city’s lowest points. “The water was so high that someone rowed a small speedboat across the wide square,” the AP reported.

This is the worst flooding in Venice since 1986 and the fourth highest tide since 1872 when the city started keeping such records, the AP said.

I’m just glad I was able to visit Venice while the ground was dry. And I hope others can too.
