Packing Light

With most airlines charging for checked luggage, here’s a few ways to pack lighter and save some money.

1. Choose flexible clothing, clothes that can be worn with almost anything. A pair of black pants, khaki pants and jeans. Shirts that can be worn with most any of them. And a black blazer. These items can be paired in a variety of ways. Remember: You don’t need three outfits for everyday. For a week’s vacation: three pairs of pants, 5-7 shirts, one set of pajamas, two pairs of shoes, a swim suit, and enough underwear in case your flight gets canceled or delayed somewhere.

2. Pack your bag in advance, so you can add stuff that you might have forgotten.

3. Two days before your trip, unpack your clothing and cut what you’re bringing in half. Do you really need five pairs of shoes?

4. Only bring one bag plus a personal item. Preferably carry on size, so you don’t have to pay the extra fees.

5. Use vacuum seal bags. They make travel ones too in case you don’t have access to a vacuum on your trip. You just roll the air out of the bag, and you have twice as much space in your luggage.vac-bags

6. Leave room in your suitcase for souvenirs.

7. Buy travel-sized toiletries. You don’t need a full tube of toothpaste or shampoo.

8. Don’t bring your whole medicine cabinet. Where you are going will likely have drug stores, so just bring the essentials: Aspirin, Imodium, etc. You don’t need every type of cold medicine you have in your cabinet.

9. Pack for the best scenario, not the worst.

10. Check out Fit everything into one bag.
